The famous Mount Kalsubai at 5400 feet is the highest peak in the Sahyadri ranges. This towering peak is located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. It functioned as a watch tower in earlier times. It is an extremely popular hiking destination for the adventure oriented. During the monsoon months, the hill comes alive with avid trekkers. Hikers throng to Mount Kalsubai to fulfill their dream of conquering the ”Everest of Maharashtra”.
There are multiple trekking routes to the summit. The most frequented one is the route from Bari village located on its Eastern side. It is around 6 kms from Bhandardara village. The trek is moderately easy but gets steep and arduous in certain segments. Iron ladders have been built by the government authorities to assist trekkers in scaling these trecherous vertical slopes.
There is a small temple dedicated to Kalsubai at the summit. The backwaters of Arthur lake look spectacular from the top. Other prominent peaks that can be sighted from Mount Kalsubai are Harishchandragad, Ratangad, Harihargad, Kulang etc. This trek is immensely popular with avid trekkers during the monsoon months. Post monsoon, these slopes of the Western Ghats are carpeted by colorful blooms and turn a bright hue.
