The twin forts of Lohagad and Visapur which were once a stronghold of Shivaji, can be accessed by foot from Malavali village near Lonavala. The 2 forts perched high can be seen from the Mumbai – Pune Expressway. During monsoon many groups of trekkers can be seen making their way up the winding trail to the forts.
Lohagad is located 52 kms from Pune and is a popular trek with the young and old alike. It is located at an altitude of 1033 m asl. The 11 km trek upto the fort takes around 1.5 hours to ascend and 1 hour to descend. On reaching the fort, trekkers are rewarded with magnificent views of the Pavana reservoir and basins of the Pavana and Indrayani rivers. One can see right upto Lonavala. The fort can be entered through one of the four huge entrances. The northwest extension of the hill resembles a scorpions tail and is named Vinchukata. Perched at this altitude, views of sunrise and sunset views are breathtaking.
Lohagad and Visapur Forts are connected by a small range.
The Bhaja Caves are also located nearby.
Trekkers are advised to carry adequate food, water, hats, sun-block, wind-cheaters, rainwear, first aid, extra battery for camera or phone. These are remote areas and nothing will be available along the way or at the top of the fort. This route tends to become slippery during monsoon so hikers should walk cautiously.
