Manali – Kaza (204 Kms 9 hours):
Kaza can be accessed from Manali via the motorable Manali-Leh Highway. Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass fall on this route. Both passes are closed during the winter months from November to May due to heavy snowfall. Rohtang Pass is expected to be opened to traffic around 6th May 2015 while Kunzum Pass is expected to be opened only by mid June this year.
The details of the route and distances are given below:
Manali – Palchan – Rohtang Pass (52 kms, 2 hours) – Gramphu (15kms, 1 hour),
– Turn Right at the fork into the Gramphu – Batal – Kaza road – Chhatru (17kms, 1 hour)
– Batal (32kms, 2 hours)- Kunzum La (13kms, 1 hour; 4551m high mountain pass)
– Jugmothang (14kms, 40 mins)- Hal (9.1kms, 20 mins.)
– Sumling (4.6kms, 10 mins.) – Kaza (14kms, 30 mins)

This 204km drive from Manali to Kaza takes between 9-11 hours depending on the road conditions and weather.

The 15 km stretch from Rohtang to Gramphoo is in a bad condition (August 2015), an extremely rocky and bumpy ride. This will slow you down considerably.
Be alert: Keep a constant lookout for falling stones and rocks as you are traversing a high mountain terrain and landslides are quite frequent in these areas.
Avoid Driving in bad weather or in low visibility conditions. The smallest of errors can be fatal in these parts.
Drink lots of water: Keep yourself constantly hydrated as you travel in high altitude regions.
