Reckong Peo is the District Headquarters of Kinnaur. It is located 224 kms from Shimla at an altitude of 2290m above sea level. This scenic village in a comparatively unexplored part of Himachal offers stunning panoramic views of the snow clad Kinner Kailash range (6050m). The picturesque orchard village of Kalpa is set above Reckong Peo and takes 30 minutes to drive there.
As per Hindu mythology and belief, Kinner Kailash is said to be the winter home of Lord Shiva. Kinner Kailash is crowned with the 79 feet high vertical rock which resembles a Shivling which changes colours as the day passes. The Shivling is considered sacred and holds a deep religious significance for Kinnauris from both the Hindu and Buddhist sects. Reckong Peo also offers a great view of the lofty Jorkandan and Raldang (5499m) peaks. Sunrise is a spectacular sight when the golden and orange rays of the rising sun set the snow clad peaks ablaze with a brilliant light.
Nestled amidst apple orchards and pinenut plantations, Reckong Peo is blessed with the most scenic landscape. There is also a large hundred year old Tibetan monastery. Reckong Peo can be covered as a half day visit from Kalpa. There are a few guesthouses in Reckong Peo but better stay options are available in Kalpa, 9 kms above Reckong Peo.
