Matheran Lake1 (2)Developed by the British in 1850 to beat the summer heat, Matheran is the smallest hill station in Asia. It is located at an altitude of 800 m asl in the Raigad District in Maharashtra. Matheran has been declared an an Eco-sensitive region by the ministry of Ministry of Forest and Environment and is strictly maintained as a vehicle free zone.

Cascading waterfalls and lush green vistas further make it an enchanting destination through the year, specially during the rains.

In the summer months temperatures range from 33 degree C to 18 degree C. During monsoons, the temperature dips further and visitors are advised to carry raingear and warm clothing.

The hill station also has a large population of monkeys which can be a menace to visitors at times.

Matheran trainAccessibility:

Matheran is located at a distance of 120 kms (3 hours) from Pune and 100 Kms (2 hours) from Mumbai which is also the nearest airport.

Being a pollution free zone, vehicles are allowed only upto Dasturi naka and can be parked there overnight for a fee.

Local Trains ply upto Neral from Mumbai and Pune. Cabs can be hired from outside Neral station to Matheran which is a distance of 8 kms.

Alternately visitors can also enjoy the toy train from Neral (near Karjat) to Matheran. The distance of 21 kms is covered in 2 hours. The toy train does not function during the monsoons.

The remaining distance from Dasturi to Matheran has to be covered by foot, on horseback or by the toy train.

Popular attractions in Matheran:

Matheran sunset1Matheran is a favourite getaway during the monsoons primarily owing to its 38 viewpoints which offer magnificent views of the Sahyadri ranges and the beautiful valleys below.

Porcupine Point: around 2 kms from the market, this view point offers a spectacular view of the sunset and deep valleys around.

Rambag Point: This scenic point offers an excellent view of sunrise. It is a 40 minute walk or a 20 minute horse ride.

Alexander point: Rambag point is visible on one side. So it can also be viewed from Rambag point.

One Tree Hill Point: Can be visited from Alexander point.

Matheran LakeCharlotte Lake: This is unarguably the most popular attraction in Matheran. Accessible through a short trek or on horse back, this beautiful lake is a mesmerizing sight. A few small hotels along the lakeside serve food and beverages. Charlotte Lake is the main source of water for the hill station.

Panorama or Display Point: Provides a 360 degree view right upto Neral and a spectacular views of Sunrise.

Honeymoon Point: Popular for the valley views and valley crossing adventure sport activities.

Louisa Point: Around 2 kms from the market, it is one of the most popular points. It offers a magnificent view of Prabal Fort, Neral and Panvel.

There are many budget and luxury hotels in Matheran that one can choose from. Most hotels offer accomodation and food packages.

Shopping:

There is a small market place with shops selling clothes, shoes, handicrafts, flowers etc.

Local transport:

Horses and hand pulled rickshaws are the only modes of transport here.

Toy Train Timings:

Neral to Matheran (Travel time 2 hours):  Train Departs at 7.30 am, 9 am, 10.35 am, 11.40 am, 12.50 pm, 17.05 pm

Matheran to Neral (Travel time 1 hour 35 minutes):  Train Departs at 7 am, 9.50 am, 12.35 am, 13.50 am, 15.15 pm, 16.30 pm.
