A good food experience is an integral part of a great vacation. Tourist destinations are flooded with eateries and selecting where to dine could be a little confusing for a visitor.
When you are visiting Shimla, the queen of hill stations, there is no dearth of places to eat. Shimla is a culinary delight with its streets lined with numerous eateries, bakeries and sweet shops. To help you experience the best culinary delights that Shimla has to offer, I have listed out a few of the best restaurants in Shimla based on my personal experience gathered over numerous trips.
On Mall Road (Best Restaurants Shimla)
Aashiana Restaurant and Bar : Multi-cuisine Run by Himachal Tourism. It resembles a glass house with large french windows with tables overlooking the ridge walkway near the church. It also has a nice terrace providing a nice view perfect for a leisurely lunch after all the walking in the mall. The menu includes, Punjabi, Himachali, Italian and Chinese cuisines.
Combermere Restaurant and Bar: Taste delicious Italian and Mexican cuisine. It is located in the Combermere hotel on mall road near the lift. A little on the expensive side.
Honey Hut: Located in the middle of Mall Road near the steps leading straight up to Christ Church. Try the yummy muffins, brownie with icecream, doughnuts, pizzas, sandwiches, tea and coffee. All desserts and beverages are served with honey. They also sell flavored honey, tea and scented soaps.
Indian Coffee House: This restaurant transports you straight back to the British Era. Menu is varied with south Indian, Chinese and non-veg dishes and food is cheap. Located on the path leading down from scandal point or post office. It is usually crowded and popular amongst the locals and tourists. Try the wada-sambar, dosa and omlettes. Cost-wise, the food is quite cheap.
Baljees: It is famous for steaming hot gulab jamuns at the outside counter. Food at the spacious restaurant behind the counter is good as well. Service was prompt and good.
Wake n Bake: Try the delicious pastas, pizza’s and pancakes. Located on the first floor near Gaiety Theatre.
Krishna Bakers: Paneer/veg Rolls, veg. kebab sticks, veg. and non-veg puffs and momo’s are a must try. It is located a few shops away from ‘Sher-e-Punjab’ restaurant, walk towards the lift. It is usually quite crowded.
Trishool Bakery: Veg. Puffs and other bakery items.
Vijay Sweets: A small sweet shop down the stairs from Trishool Bakery. It is slightly conjusted with 3 tables but steaming hot stuffed parathas are worth the squeeze. Try the samosa with chana also.
Alfa Restaurant: Located on mall road near Scandal Point. Try the stuffed Paratha’s and Sandwiches.
Devicos Restaurant and D Lounge Bar: Located on the road leading down from The Post Office towards the Indian Coffee House. Phone: +91-177-2806335 , 0177-3295800. Menu and more details.
City Point Bakery: Located a little ahead of ‘The Indian Coffee House’ on the road leading down from the Post Office. Try the Burgers, Puffs and Patties. It is well stocked with eatable options.
Fire Station Cafe at the Institute of Advanced Studies (Viceregal Lodge): This lovely cafeteria with a library has a nice fast food menu. I would recommend the lovely steaming Idli’s, veg patties/puff and rajma-rice.
La Pino’s: A Pizza joint located in the middle of Mall road near the steps leading up to the church.
KFC, Pizza Hut: Located on Mall road near the lift above Madame showroom.
Domino’s: Located on Mall road near Gaiety Theatre.
Beekays Bakery: Veg. Puffs and other bakery items.
In Lakkar Bazaar (Best Restaurants Shimla)
Tripti Bakery (Just Baked): Delicious Pastries, Apple Pie, Veg Puff , Breads and cookies. The best I have ever had at affordable costs. Nice big pastries cost around Rs 50-60 each (Try the Pyramid Truffle, Choco Truffle, Butter scotch, Fresh Strawberry). Butter cookies are simply delicious.
SitaRam: Popular for Chole-Bhatura and Aaloo Tikki. It is a small shop with just 2 tables tightly squeezed at the back. It is located just as you walk into Lakkar Bazaar. If you are very particular about cleanliness and hygiene, get it packed. Opens at 10.30 am in the morning and 4 pm in the evening. Stock runs out within an hour. So get there on time.
Restaurants on the Chandigarh – Shimla Highway
Timber Trail (On NH22, just ahead of Parwanoo): Has a indoor restaurant and a nice terrace restaurant offering great views of the Shiwalik ranges. Its a luxury resort and the food is expensive here.
McDonald’s: At Jabli (74 kms, 2 hour 30 mins. from Shimla)
Cafe Coffee Day: At Sanawar (68 kms, 2 hours 15 minutes from Shimla)
Cafe Coffee Day: At Dharampur (64 kms, 2 hours from Shimla)
Haveli: Dharampur (64 kms, 2 hours from Shimla)
Hot Millions: Dharampur (64 kms, 2 hours from Shimla)
Giani Da Dhaba: Dharampur (64 kms, 2 hours from Shimla). A very popular ‘dhaba’ on this route so is mostly crowded.
Apple Cart Inn: Kiarighat (24 kms, 45 minutes from Shimla). Nice garden restaurant with swings under swaying trees. Also has a play area for kids. It is located on your left, right on the highway while driving towards Shimla.
